In 2015, Openreach announced detailed plans for the formal retirement of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) services by 2027. This also includes analogue and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN).

A brief look at the timeline Openreach has in place:

The Big Switch Off doesn't just affect organisations, it affects everyone, Openreach and Partners have had a huge task on hand to ensure everyone is moved across in time before the lights go dark.

Why is this important?

Although there may seem like a decent amount of time until 2027, there are 13 million PTSN lines and ISDN channels that need to be migrated before they go end of life.

With no two organisations operating the same, it is important to understand your current situation and know how to move forward, and be prepared for a seamless transition.

What does “Stop Sell” mean?

Once Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) coverage has reached 75% of premises in an exchange area, a “Stop Sell” will come into effect for all copper-based services where the premise is enabled for FTTP.

What is the impact?

Stop Sell restricts the use of certain products where there is a strategic aim to withdraw the product at a later date – the following order scenarios will not be possible for products restricted by a Stop Sell:

New Supply
Working Lines takeover
Start of Stopped Lines
Addition of Lines and Channel to Existing Installations

Migrations
Communication Provider Transfers
Bandwidth Modify
Addition of Broadband to Copper Voice Lines

What products will be affected?

Below are some examples of the typical products that are currently connected to a telephone line. After the Big Switch Off, these may not work when the line is migrated.

Is there an IP equivalent?

What if I have no power?
How do I connect to the outside world?
